How to get more views/subscribers on your YouTube channel

How to get more views/subscribers on your YouTube channel

ok, so let me tell you its not an easy task — you need to be following this meticulously for 1000 days .

The 1000 Day Rule states that for any entrepreneurial venture to succeed, you should expect to be WORSE off than you were at your day job for the first 1000 days of your new business. Don’t quit before 1000 days. Thats the time you need to give to any new business

Focus on the content. It has to be shot properly , even if you are using a good mobile phone, its ok. Dont necessarily have to spend on DSLR etc initially. YouTube earnings are surprisingly very low as compared to the general hype in the market — people believe you get paid on the basis of number of subscribers, but actually you get paid when people watch the ads that are served in between your videos. And an Indian audience suffers from the disadvantage that CPM rates are low and Indians will mostly skip ads. So, be economical in your spends. Get a decent background, make sure audio quality is good, thumbnails are attractive so that audience is induced to click on them ( get a freelancer for that or use free softwares like Canva), and use plugins like vidIQ for helping you set the right tags for the videos.

Also make playlists to group videos according to sub-themes. In my channel, the playlists are Career Guidance, Career Conversations, Financial Planning and Motivational. Important to also create End -Screens having your other videos/playlists , so that you have a higher chance of retaining the viewer at the end of the video

Write the descriptions thoroughly as the YouTube algorithm knows nothing about the video except the tags, descriptions and how your audience is liking/hating the videos. This also includes the Retention rates i.e. how much % of your video is actually watched by your audience. An early drop-off means the algorithm believes that you have just used a good clickbait and the audience realised that early on in the video.

Slowly, if your content is good, people will start noticing you. If they notice, word-of-mouth and sharing on social media will follow automatically. The algorithm indeed ranks you highly if people start commenting and sharing. And that helps you get into YouTube suggested videos. So content is king.

Follow a specific theme and see if there are enough people searching for those topics — else you will be disappointed that there is no demand for your high quality content — so market mapping is very important. In my case, I have been focussing on the Youth and aspects related to their career and financial planning decisions. Of course, its a small segment as compared to say, a General Entertainment Channel (GEC) but I am happy to cater to a small audience, a niche which wants authentic and no-nonsense content related to Careers in Commerce. Sometimes you will see superficial content creators getting more views/subscribers than you. Because they give people a momentary high, (close your eyes and say everything is easy) even if its unrealistic. But people often prefer a convenient lie over an inconvenient truth.

Even if you create very good content, how will people discover you amidst the plethora of competitors. So marketing is important. Remember why Chetan Bhagat books sell.

I share my videos on Instagram, FB, LinkedIn, Twitter, Tumbler, Whatsapp, Telegram, Blogger, Medium, Pinterest and Tumblr. It also helps the video rank in the Google algorithm, creating invaluable backlinks from quality sites.

Also you have to shamelessly urge your audience to also share the same. I know the request to Like, Share, Subscribe, Comment becomes irritating. But thats really important.

You can also check from the Analytics report as to what are your sources of traffic, Subscribers Vs Non-Subscribers watching the content, demographics of audience, top searched And that will help you refine the content for the future.

The problem in an overpopulated country like India is that you are jostling for space, in sever competition from a multitude of equally talented people. How will people discover that you are really good?

A real life public speaking event can suddenly give you a good quantum of subscribers . So a mix of online and offline is very important.

I have so far reached 42,500 subscribers — its a painfully slow journey — So far we have clocked 5 million+ views with ~15 million minutes of playtime

A single video, like my Mock Interview at IIM Ahmedabad can go viral, clock 1.5 million views and give you a sudden surge of traffic

#MBA Anurag Singal, Mock Interview at IIM Ahmedabad (Watch from 2:30 onwards)

I broadly started in July 2017 , so haven’t exhausted the 1000 day window, before I decide whether its worth the time and effort.

You can watch my channel “Anurag Singal YouTube” Anurag Singal and see how I have implemented the above
